The capital of South Korea is often underestimated and overlooked on a tourists list of places to visit, but believe me it is an exciting, vibrant, beautiful place to see. The city perfectly combines its history with modern infrastructure and facilities to provide a wonderful place to explore.
Seoul has a variety of things to see and do, so I have tried to narrow it down to my own personal favourites that I would recommend to first time visitors:
• Palaces – Get a taste for the history of Korea and its royal family. Gyeongbok Palace is a must see, you can pay a small fee to stroll around or jump in with one of the English tours which are frequently available. It is also worth checking out the traditional wooden homes nearby the palace that have been wonderfully restored.
• Everland – Definitely one for the families, a great day out at Korea’s own version of Disney Land.
• Mountains – Seoul is surrounded by mountains and a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of downtown Seoul is to head out hiking at Bukhasan; easily accessible from the city centre. Best ventured to during the week to avoid the crowd’s, you can take on a variety of trail levels and take advantage of some spectacular views.
• Itaewon – You will hear of this place as soon as you arrive as it is a mecca for tourists looking for some evening entertainment. There are bars, clubs and restaurants lining the streets so you are sure to find the perfect watering hole here. The trendy clubs, such as Volume, attract some of the best DJ’s, so if you are looking to continue to the party on till the small hours Itaewon is the place to be.
• City Bus Tour – Like all major cities Seoul has numerous bus tours, and for me it’s the easiest way to explore and take in most of the major attractions, for $10 you can visit palaces, markets, Seoul Tower, shopping centres etc etc. For first timers I think a ticket on these buses is a must, and is great for getting to grips with the layout of the city.
The list could go on forever, but the above are my top five recommendations…however I will have a quick mention for; Cheonggyecheon stream for an evening stroll, Korea’s war memorial, Gwacheon racetrack and top it all off with a visit to a traditional Korean sauna!
Don’t be put off by Seoul’s location, don’t take the easy option of Shanghai or Tokyo, give Seoul a chance, you won’t be disappointed.
